Your Brand Is Already Saying Something
When people hear the word branding, I think a lot of us immediately picture a logo, colours and fonts. And yes, those things matter. But when I think about a brand, I think just as much about the photos on your website, the video clips you share, the way your team is photographed, your space, your products, your process, and all of the little things people see before they ever actually meet you.
That’s where brand visuals come in.
It’s really about how your business feels
Good brand visuals aren’t just about having nice photos.
They help people get a sense of who you are. Are you polished? Relaxed? Creative? Approachable? Modern? Warm? High-end?
Someone can pick up on a lot of that from your visuals without really thinking about it. That’s one of the things I love about this kind of work. We can show what you do, but we can also show what it feels like to work with you.
You don’t need everything to match perfectly
I’m a big believer in consistency, but I don’t think that means every photo has to look exactly the same.
Your brand can still have personality, variety and different moods. What matters is that there’s some kind of common thread. Maybe it’s the light, the colours, the way things are styled, or simply the overall feeling. Over time, people start to recognize that.
Ideally, someone should be able to see one of your photos while scrolling and have a pretty good idea that it belongs to your business.
One great headshot probably isn’t enough anymore
There was a time when businesses could get a few updated headshots, throw one on the website and call it a day.
Now we’re using content everywhere. Your website, Instagram, LinkedIn, email, ads, Google, printed pieces, launches, announcements, you name it.
So when I’m planning a brand session, I’m not only thinking about getting one really good portrait.
I’m thinking about variety. Photos of you. Details. Your space. Your hands doing the work. Wide images. Close-ups. Horizontal images for your website. Vertical images for social media. Photos with room for text. Little in-between moments that make everything feel more human.
I want you to walk away with options.
Video is part of it too
This is a big one. I don’t really see brand photography and video as two completely separate things anymore.
Sometimes a simple five-second clip of you working, walking through your space, interacting with a client or using your product can say so much. Not every piece of video needs to become a highly produced Reel either.
I love filming short, cinematic clips that can be used again and again. You can put text over them, add a voiceover, use them in Stories, mix them into a Reel or just keep them in your content library for when you need something.
It gives your brand a little more movement and personality.
Professional doesn’t have to mean stiff
This is probably one of the biggest things I want people to know before a branding session with me. You do not have to suddenly become a different version of yourself because a camera is there. I want things to feel polished, but I also want them to feel like you.
There can be movement. There can be laughing. Things can be a little imperfect. We can change direction halfway through if something feels better.
Some of my favourite images usually happen in those in-between moments anyway.
I think about shooting brand sessions as building a library
This is probably the easiest way to explain how I approach brand visuals.
I’m not just trying to give you a gallery of beautiful images from one day.
I want to help you build a library. Something you can keep pulling from when you launch something new, update your website, need to post on a random Wednesday, bring someone new onto your team or just realize your content is starting to feel a little stale. And ideally, that library keeps growing with your business.
Because your brand isn’t static. It changes as you do. Your visuals should be able to grow with it too.
At the end of the day, good brand visuals should look beautiful, but more importantly, they should actually feel like your business.
